COLLEEN CRITCHER / ARTIST STATEMENT / ENERGY SERIES
As an artist I am intrigued with the concept of investigation. I see the world as a laboratory to be absorbed and processed individually. These paintings strive to find explanations through abstract paintings that emulate the beauty, energy, and emotion of life.
In seeking to explore my own interpretation of the world, I find painting to be a merging of the concrete, the emotional and the spiritual. I embrace the painting process as a means of exploration through meditation. While my interests in spirituality, science and the human condition fuel hours of personal study, I hope to engage the viewer in their own reflection and ignite further contemplation.
COLLEEN CRITCHER / BIOGRAPHY
Colleen Critcher is a visual artist currently fascinated by commodity culture, kitsch, and plastic things. Her recent works obsessively explore images of garden gnomes and dinosaur figurines, as she investigates the powerful significance of seemingly menial objects in contemporary life. Past work includes several series of abstracts which investigate the human spirit. While her subjects have evolved over the years, the artist’s love of vibrant color, attention to detail and formal sensibilities remains consistent.
Critcher holds an M.F.A. in Painting from Savannah College of Art and Design. She lives in Florence, South Carolina where she maintains a studio. She has taught art foundations courses at Coker University, Coastal Carolina University, and Francis Marion University. She serves as the gallery coordinator for University Place Gallery. Her work has been shown at The Southern, Redux Contemporary Art Center, Kai Lin Art, Gutstein Gallery, and 701 Center for Contemporary Art.
